Terry Fox Run

Today we joined together as a school and community for the Terry Fox Run.  It was a wonderful way to end the week.  

Thank you very much for donating your loonies to support Terry's dream.  All the money raised will be going to the Terry Fox Foundation to support Cancer Research.  

Today we worked on two subtraction strategies, "Count Up" or "Count Back".  Some of us needed to use a number line to do this strategy.

If you only have to subtract 1, 2, or 3 from a number, go ahead and count back.  Counting up works well when you have to take more than 5 away from a number (9 - 6), or if the numbers in the question are near each other (8 - 7).  We all need to be practicing our subtraction facts at home.  Check the back of the agenda for subtraction facts to practice or try playing subtraction war, with a deck of cards (ask me).

We learned more about Terry Fox.  Did you know that he was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba? We watched a video and discussed how we felt about him.  Here is what we came up with:

Today was lots of fun!

We learned the rules of the 100 chart. (ask me)

We reviewed the difference between odd and even.  (Ask me to show you the finger trick)  Check out the odd and even games on the blog in the "At Home" section.

We practiced skip counting forwards and backwards by 5s to and from 100 (200 grade 3).  Be prepared to exercise while you practice at home with us!!!!

We watched a great video about eating healthy and worked on our food group plates.

  

Today was a busy day.  We reviewed our doubles in math class.  We read "Two of Everything" by Lily Toy Hong.  We also learned a "Doubles Rap" (see below).  Please practice these doubles facts at home, as they need to be in place A.S.A.P.

 We also read the story, "Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes (above).  It is about a girl who loves her name, but after going to school and getting teased about it, she starts to "wilt" on the inside and out.  

After the story we talked about what kind of people we wanted to be and what our beliefs are.

Today we read, "The Teacher from the Black Lagoon" by Mike Thaler. As a class, we talked about the kind of teachers we wanted to have this year. Here is the list of must haves we came up with:

It was hilarious!

The Teamwork Puzzle!

On the first day of school, Mrs. Yard gave us each a puzzle piece that had our names on them. Each piece was a very wacky shape! We got to colour and decorate them to represent ourselves. Today, we were so excited to put them all together! We sat in a circle and if we saw two pieces that fit together, we got to tell Mrs. Yard. We tried the two pieces together and if they fit together, we got to tape them.
