Sledge Hockey with Sam Unrau & Bill Muloin

Sledge Hockey player, Sam Unrau and Bill Muloin from the Society for Manitobans with Disabilites, came for a visit today.  Sam and Bill are both very knowledgeable and passionate about the sport of Sledge Hockey, so it was very exciting to listen to them and to participate.  We even got to sit in Bill's sledge!  Sam brought to our attention many important thoughts about disability awareness.  He showed us this year's Canadian Paralympic solgan, as shown above: "It's not what's missing, It's what's there".  What a great solgan!  We got to see up close some goalie equipment.  The metal picks on the stick and glove were crazy sharp!  We learned some important imformation for our project that we couldn't find on the websites we looked at.  We each wrote about one thing that we learned and one thing that we liked about our visit.  Here are our thoughts:

Steven: I learned that any person can join at any age and at anytime.
Garrett: I really liked sitting on the sledge.
A.J. I learned that the sledge is wobbly.
Meghan: I learned that goalies don't wear big goalie pads.
Cole: I like that everyone can play.
Ater: I learned that parents can play with their kids, boys and girls can be on the same team and anyone can play.
Tristen A: I liked it when we yelled; "Go Canada, Go!"
Nathan: I learned that some goalies can play cross legged and some have their legs and sledges straight out.
Trace: I like the sticks that they use.
Tristan G: I really like the equipment and I learned that girls can play.
Alyssa: People with disabilities can play sledge hockey.
Bella: I liked going in the sledge.  It was so much fun!
Caitlin & Sherrisa: I learned that anyone can play sledge hockey.
Jackson: I learned that players can bodycheck.
Sijad: I liked how Bill and Sam taught us everything they knew.

Here are a few pictures of our visit:

100 Day & Valentine's Day Activities

Today we had 10 centres to travel to for 100 Day/Valentine's Day.  Throughout the day, we made sure to do 10 repetitions of each of the following exercises, for a grand total of 100:

Jumping Jacks
Sit-ups
Lunges
Push-ups
Toe Touches
Knee Bends
Side Steps
Arm Curls
Shoulder Presses
Side Stretches

At the centres, our students had to complete activities that were either related to 100 Day or Valentine's Day.  Students were estimating, making 100 Dixie cup pyramids, counting and gluing their 100 collected items, building with 100 Lego pieces, calculating what they could do in 100 seconds, drawing what they would look like at 100 years old, writing $100.00 stories, making Valentine's crafts, playing Valentine's math games and eating yummy treats!!

Happy Valentine's Day everyone.  Enjoy the long weekend!
