What have we been up to in LA and Social Studies??

Wow! September is already gone and we're quickly moving on to October. Over the past month, I have been very busy meeting, assessing and conferencing with all of the students in Room 15. As mentioned in our email update, all of the student's strengths and weaknesses in both reading and writing are now being planned for. Please refer to our email for details about home reading, sight word, speaking and spelling programs which will all begin throughout October.

Some of our September highlights:

- Learning to edit our work by looking at meaning, details, spelling and punctuation

-Sorting student jobs, teacher jobs and jobs that belong to both of us

-Amazing "All About Me" presentations

- Daily sight word routines

-Learning and playing fun sight word games like "Splat"

What a great first month to a great year! We would also like to congratulate all of the students of Room 15, our first recipients of the "Lakewood Is Proud Of You" award. Room 15 earned the award by being kind, respectful, inclusive and genuine to one another. Way to go boys and girls!

Terry Fox Run

Today we joined together as a school and community for the Terry Fox Run.  It was a wonderful way to end the week.

Thank you very much for donating your loonies to support Terry's dream.  All the money raised will be going to the Terry Fox Foundation to support Cancer Research.

Today we worked on two subtraction strategies, "Count Up" or "Count Back".  Some of us needed to use a number line to do this strategy.

If you only have to subtract 1, 2, or 3 from a number, go ahead and count back.  Counting up works well when you have to take more than 5 away from a number (9 - 6), or if the numbers in the question are near each other (8 - 7).  We all need to be practicing our subtraction facts at home.  Check the back of the agenda for subtraction facts to practice or try playing subtraction war, with a deck of cards (ask me).

We learned more about Terry Fox.  Did you know that he was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba? We watched a video and discussed how we felt about him.  Here is what we came up with:

"Terry Fox is _____________"

a hero - Victoria
brave - Melany
caring – Caitlin
thoughtful – Sherrisa
determined – Patrick
strong – Anthony
helpful – Maddox
awesome – Nolan
breath taking – Sijad
great – Harpreet
loving – Andi
generous – Marcella
a good runner – Harpreet
fearless – Maconce
a bucket filler – Connor
a believer - Alyssa

Today was lots of fun!

We learned the rules of the 100 chart. (ask me)
We reviewed the difference between odd and even.  (Ask me to show you the finger trick)  Check out the odd and even games on the blog in the "At Home" section.

We practiced skip counting forwards and backwards by 5s to and from 100 (200 grade 3).  Be prepared to exercise while you practice at home with us!!!!

We watched a great video about eating healthy and worked on our food group plates.

Today was a busy day.  We reviewed our doubles in math class.  We read "Two of Everything" by Lily Toy Hong.  We also learned a "Doubles Rap" (see below).  Please practice these doubles facts at home, as they need to be in place A.S.A.P.

Check the front pocket of the agenda for a doubles facts flip chart that looks like this:
 Doubles Rap:

We also read the story, "Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes (above).  It is about a girl who loves her name, but after going to school and getting teased about it, she starts to "wilt" on the inside and out.

After the story we talked about what kind of people we wanted to be and what our beliefs are.
Here are some examples of beliefs from students in our classroom:
