Terry Fox Run

Today we learned about Terry Fox.  He was an incredible and inspirational hero.  We are proud that he is Canadian.  Here are some of the words that we came up with to describe him:

Today Room 15 learned a rap song about doubles.  It went like this:

It's the doubles, baby!
Let's go!  Let's go!
It's the doubles, baby,
And it starts with ZERO!

0 + 0 = 0 Oh!
1 + 1 = 2 Oooooooh!
2 + 2 = 4 More!
3 + 3 = 6 Kicks!
4 + 4 = 8 That's great!
5 + 5 = 10 Again!
6 + 6 = 12 That's swell!
7 + 7 = 14 Let's lean!
8 + 8 = 16 You're a queen!
9 + 9 = 18 Jelly Bean!

Today we learned all the ways to make ten.  There are 11 ways to make ten.  We made an adding rainbow to help us remember.  We also learned a song and played the "Totally Ten Snake" game.  Here are some pictures of what we did.

We will be learning a few more songs about making ten and playing, "Go Ten" next week.  These number combinations are so important to master, as they are heavily relied upon, when adding and subtracting larger (2 and 3-digit) numbers.

We are making "Name Monsters" in Room 15 with oil pastels.  Look for them up in the hallway very soon.  We will also post some on our Blog in the art gallery section, when they are finished.

Today was a rainy day at school.  We started illustrating the front of our portfolios with our Self Portraits.  Some of the students in Room 15 joined the Cross Country Club today.  We are crossing our fingers for better running weather on Wednesday.  Please visit our Blog regularly.  If you'd like updates  about our Blog, please sign up with your email at the bottom of this page.

The first day of school was very exciting for both the students and teachers in Room 15.  Once we have all the media release forms returned, we can start posting pictures of your lovely darlings and show you what we've been working on at school.  Please have all forms filled out and returned with your child on Monday, September 9th, 2013. 

Please note:

• Choir meets on Tuesdays at 11:55 am in the music room, starting this week.
• Cross Country Club meets on Monday/Wednesday/Friday at 11:25 am in the gym, starting this week.  Students will be eating their lunch in the gym following the run outside.
• Terry Fox Run is on Thursday, September 26th at 2:45 pm - 3:15 pm.  We will be running around the field behind the school, weather dependent.  We are collecting Toonies for Terry.  
• The September Lakewood School Newsletter will be coming home this week.

Room 15 would like to officially welcome our new principal, Lisa White to Lakewood School!  Mrs. White is very happy and excited to be part of the Lakewood family.  You've probably already seen her out and about in the hallways, outside on the playground and in many classrooms.  Mrs. White brings with her, an enthusiasm for learning and a wealth of knowledge.  We're very thrilled that she has joined our team!
